Modify existing site?: no
URL of existing site: http://
Budget: undecided
Project Details:
It is desirable to setup functionality and let master accounts
add/delete/edit sub-sections as they see fit. We want it self-managable,
without requiring extra coding in the future. The web pages will
be truly dynamic, pulling data from several sources on the server
and piecing together the HTML. You could see one thing on the
page, make a change in a database, reload the page, and the change
is reflected. It is modelled after http://www.egroups.com in a
lot
of ways, but also adds a few things and removes others.
We will need
a server and the domain name registered.
-an administrator
account
-admins can all accounts types
-all account types admin, groups, and user
-all account types can have their privelages set, to grant them
read/write
access to areas and/or admin capabilities
-a creative web designer who can pull this off!
So far, it
sounds like a typical network setup. The front page will be similar
to http://www.bluesnews.com, where the top-left corner shows the
login/password
boxes, a top-center table shows the website title, a left sidebar
(table, not
frame) shows what you can access plus a login box, and the rest
is to show
news.
These are
the items listed on the left sidebar. Not all of them are
accessible until login.
login:
a name and password for the member
forums:
-privelaged users can add/edit/delete forums
-links to forums can be added dynamically to any page in the website
-can be setup with password protection
-can email responses to the original poster
-can be setup to email all responses to subscribers
files:
-can upload/download/view files
database:
-can be add/edit/deleted online
-has import/export capabilities
classifieds:
-sub-areas can be defined
-each sub-area can be set for public/private/group/user access
-only public sub-areas are listed on the front page; private pages
are
additionally listed when the user logs in
news:
-privelaged users can add/edit/remove news items, which of course,
are
reflected on the front page
-news items can be imported and exported to HTML and text
-news items are automatically time/date stamped by the database
when imported
logs:
-all activities are logged in seperate files
logins
forum posts/edits
news
management activities

to project:
I know what I am looking for, just find me the right designer.
Classification
of needs:
I will need help with most aspects of the site's design.
1st Admired
website: http://www.egroups.com
What they like about the site: has much functionality, authentication
2nd Admired
website: http://www.bluesnews.com
What they like about the site: dynamic news
3rd Admired
website: http://www.creonline.com/wwwboard/index.html
What they like about the site: dynamic forums
Additional
Comments:
We would like a website to serve our club, InvestNW, and promote
its growth and activity. The pages served will be a result of
a dynamic database underneath. A host and domain name registration
will be required.
We are looking
to include the following functionality:
- An authentication
system that allows/prevents access and privelages of the site
- Site structure and flow configurable by high level accounts
- A database engine that can be used to provide dynamic info in
pages such as:
news
forums
articles
classifieds
online newsletter
success stories
calendar
contact lists
user profiles
logs
any other functionality a high level user can think of
- File storage and retrieval
We may want
to contract someone to design the site through a high level user
account.
There are
several websites that have similar functionality:
http://www.egroups.com
http://www.bluesnews.com
http://www.creonline.com/wwwboard/index.html
Example scenario:
Joe Surfer hits front page. Dynamic news and a login is listed,
but Joe clicks a drop down box with the word 'classifieds', revealing
a srollable list with the entries:
For Sale
For Rent
Buyers Wanted
Investors Wanted
Properties Wanted
Joe clicks
on one of them and views the contents, but upon trying to post,
is directed to a login screen which also lets him choose 'new
member'. Not being a member, he clicks on 'home' and then a link
labeled 'files' which shows a list of files with description and
size. He downloads one of them by clicking on it. Joe then clicks
on 'forums' and sees different topics, but decides on 'Future
Homebuyers'. Joe replies to a message and does not fill out the
login/password fields on the form. He is directed to a page that
asks him to login or become a new member, so he goes through the
process and it informs him to
check his email address to validate his account. He checks his
email and replies to the message. He then chooses 'home' and logs
in, then sees he has one pending forum message. Joe validates
it and checks the forums and tries to post on 'For Sale: Commercial';
it tells him a request has been sent to the forum manager to grant
him access to the forum.
Jane Admin
checks her email and sees an email from the website, detailing
the timestamp and email address. A link is listed to view their
profile. Another email shows a request from the website for Joe
Surfer to access to 'For Sale: Commercial'. She clicks the profile
link in the new member email which brings her to a SSL login screen
and upon authenticating, continues to Joe Surfer's log. It shows
Joe posting a reply in the 'Future HomeBuyers' section, so she
clicks the link to the message and reads it. It looks good, so
she checks Joes pending message in 'For Sale: Commercial'. It
too looks good, so she grants him access.
Bob Designer
decides to restructure the site; he wants the front page to list
calendar events submitted by staff and authorized members. Using
software on his local machine, he rewrites the script that pulls
data from the news database and adds in code to include fields
from the calendar database such as date, submitter and content.
He logs into the web site or the computer running the web site,
uploads the new script into a holding pen, then logs out. At the
next maintainence interval, the web site is put on hold while
the new components update.
